Understanding Fire Detection (SANS 10139)

This course runs over 2 and 1/2 days - the first two days we discuss the SANS 10139 Code of Practice, and on the 3rd day we revise certain problematic areas that may occur. This revision session is then followed by the final summative assessment - the examination based on SANS 10139 - the 10 modules completed on the previous days. Please refer to the details below for further information. In addition to this, a seperate course conducted during an afternoon session has been added where we deal with Understanding Fire Detection for Hospitals (SANS 322).

Introduction to SANS 10139. History, scope, limitations and variations.
The need and categories of fire alarm and detection systems in accordance with SANS 10139.

Session 2

Systems in explosive atmospheres.
System component certification.
Monitoring and integrity of circuits.

Session 3

Zoning of detectors, manual call points and sounders.
Audible alarm devices.
Visual alarm devices.
Portable alarm devices.
Alarms for people with impaired hearing.
Staged fire alarms.
Fire Brigade signalling systems.

Session 4

Installation responsibility.
Inspection, testing and commissioning.
Documentation and certification.
The fire plume and stratification.

Sessions 5 - 10 (08:00 - 17:00)

Session 5

Manual call points usage and siting.
Fire detector types and siting.

Session 6

Siting of fire detectors on flat ceilings and pitched roofs.

Session 7

Siting of:

Fire detectors in escape routes and corridors.
Detectors in voids.
Ceiling limits.
Detectors on roofs with beams, cells and obstructions.

Session 8

Siting of:

Beam detectors.
Linear Heat detectors.
Aspiration detection.
Flame detectors.
Duct smoke detectors.

Session 9

Networked systems.
Power supplies and calculations.
Electro magnetic compatibility.

Session 10

Limiting false alarms.
Soak Tests.
